With effect from 1st of January 2009, The Marine Pollution Prevention Act No 35 of 2008 is in place an it repeals the provisions of the Marine Pollution Prevention Act No 59 of 1981.

The MPPA is the apex body established by the Government of Sri Lanka, under the Marine Pollution Prevention Act, with the sole responsilibity to prevent, control, and manage the pollution of Sri Lanka's Marine environment.
